Owning a Home

Diana's children now live in a Habitat For Humanity home.

Homeowner families are required to invest between 300 and 500 hours, depending on family composition, of "sweat equity" in their own home and other Habitat sites. This reduces the cost of the house, increases the pride of ownership among family members, and fosters the development of positive relationships with other volunteers. Families pay the cost of the house at no profit to the affiliate through an interest free mortgage over 25 years. These funds are used to finance the construction of more houses.

Families are selected for home ownership through an application process. The family selection committee interviews the family at their home to evaluate their level of need,
willingness to work with the program and the ability to pay for the house.
